Authorities in South Africa have dismantled a significant crystal methamphetamine laboratory, leading to the arrest of two Mexican citizens. The raid took place on a farm located in the Limpopo province, close to the border with Zimbabwe, and was the culmination of a two-month investigation into suspicious activities.
During the operation, police also apprehended two Zimbabwean nationals and one individual from Malawi. The seized drugs and equipment are valued at approximately 600 million rand (about $37 million USD). This bust is part of a concerning trend, as South African police have uncovered several similar large meth labs on remote farms in recent years, often with connections to Mexican nationals.
This incident echoes previous discoveries. In May, 11 individuals, including four Mexicans, were arrested in connection with a suspected drug lab north-west of Johannesburg. Last September, five Mexicans were arrested after police busted a meth lab in the eastern part of the country, seizing drugs worth $20 million. In July 2024, three Mexicans were among those arrested at a Limpopo farm where a meth lab and drugs valued at $108 million were discovered.
The five suspects from the Musina farm are scheduled to appear in court on Monday to face charges related to drug manufacturing and possession. Police described the operation as “sophisticated, industrial-scale” and intended for the production of dangerous illicit substances.
South Africa is recognized as a significant consumer market for crystal meth, and its geography and porous borders also make it a crucial transit point for illicit drugs. The UN has highlighted these factors contributing to the drug trade. Beyond South Africa, other African nations have also seen the dismantling of similar operations, including Nigeria, where a Nigerian-Mexican methamphetamine production syndicate was recently disrupted.
Reports from US-Africa Command (Africom) indicate that since 2023, 14 Mexican-operated laboratories have been raided across the continent, in countries such as Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa. Experts suggest this indicates a growing trend of Mexican criminal cartels utilizing Africa not just as a trafficking route, but increasingly as a base for drug production.
