Uganda's GBV Response System Faces Scrutiny Amidst Service Gaps

A comprehensive review of Uganda’s mechanisms for addressing gender-based violence (GBV) has revealed critical areas where survivors face substantial challenges.

The study, which delved into the effectiveness of the country’s response system, found that both law enforcement agencies and healthcare facilities are not adequately equipped to handle the complex needs of GBV survivors.

This lack of preparedness translates into a difficult journey for individuals seeking help, often encountering further trauma or inadequate support when reporting incidents or seeking medical attention. The findings suggest a need for urgent improvements in training, resources, and protocols within these vital service sectors.

Specifically, the research pointed to issues such as insufficient evidence collection by police, leading to weakened legal cases, and a lack of specialized care or privacy within health facilities for survivors. These systemic weaknesses can deter survivors from coming forward and hinder the pursuit of justice.
