Wakiso District Ramps Up Waste Management Ahead of National Cleaning Day

Wakiso District is rolling out a comprehensive plan to enhance its solid waste management systems as the National Cleaning Day approaches. The district leadership, in a recent consultative meeting, agreed on several key resolutions aimed at curbing illegal dumping, improving garbage collection efficiency, and promoting waste sorting and recycling.

District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune emphasized a shift in perspective, urging residents to view waste not merely as a sanitation problem but as a potential source of economic opportunity. “Garbage should not only be seen as a problem. It can also be an economic opportunity if we properly sort, recycle and manage it,” Kyeyune stated.

New measures include the formation of sanitation committees tasked with identifying households requiring garbage collection services. Community barazas will be organized to facilitate agreements on waste collection service providers and reasonable fees. Local councils are also mandated to allocate funds for solid waste management in their budgets.

Enforcement against illegal dumping will be strengthened through the recruitment of scouts to identify offenders. The “polluter-pays” principle will be strictly applied, holding those responsible for improper waste disposal accountable. Town Clerks are directed to ensure these measures are implemented within their jurisdictions, while schools and institutions will be encouraged to join sensitization campaigns.

The district also intends to explore income-generating possibilities for youth in waste collection, sorting, and recycling. A technical review of the Menvu Landfill is planned to assess potential for waste sorting and recycling, pending approval from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Additionally, Wakiso plans to seek additional garbage trucks from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

Kyeyune stressed the importance of timely waste clearance, especially following the National Cleaning Day, to prevent accumulation. He also committed to reviving past waste management strategies, highlighting the necessity of sustained community and leadership involvement for effective results.

These initiatives are geared towards the National Cleaning Day on August 29, 2026, and aim to encourage ongoing community responsibility for maintaining clean neighborhoods.
