The Ugandan media landscape has lost a prominent voice with the untimely death of Anthony Kushaba, who passed away on August 21st at the age of 38 due to heart failure. Kushaba, who worked for Uganda Radio Network (URN) for seven years, was found dead in his residence after failing to report to work.
Colleagues remember Kushaba not just for his booming voice, but for his commanding presence, energy, and unwavering confidence. He was often described as a journalist who was direct, sometimes to the point of being inconvenient, but always genuine. His ability to challenge editors and speak truth to power, regardless of the recipient’s status, defined his approach to journalism.
Kushaba’s tenure at URN saw him excel as a bureau chief for the Kigezi region. He possessed an intimate knowledge of western Uganda, building strong relationships with local radio stations and individuals across various districts. This deep regional understanding allowed him to produce distinctive, people-centered stories that resonated with audiences.
His straightforward nature, while sometimes misunderstood as arrogance, was in fact a reflection of his commitment to honesty and his work ethic. Former colleagues and editors attest to his reliability, stating that his word could always be trusted. He was unafraid to expose political and business malpractice, particularly when ordinary citizens were affected, always pursuing stories with facts and fairness.
Beyond his professional achievements, Kushaba was also recognized for his generosity and mentorship. He was known to assist colleagues with accommodation during assignments and actively mentored younger journalists, helping them navigate the demanding newsroom environment and grow in their careers. His selflessness and dedication left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Anthony Kushaba is survived by his brother, exiled human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza. He will be laid to rest in his ancestral home in Ntungamo district.
