DP Mourns Former Kawempe MP, Ali Sserunjogi

The Democratic Party (DP) has announced the passing of Hajji Ali Sserunjogi, a significant figure within the party and a former Member of Parliament representing Kawempe Constituency. His death has sent ripples of sadness through the party ranks.

Hajji Sserunjogi’s political journey included his election to Parliament in the 1980 general elections. He remained a steadfast and active participant in DP affairs throughout his life, embodying the party’s core principles.

His commitment extended to providing personal resources to bolster party activities, a testament to his dedication. The DP leadership, including President General Norbert Mao, has extended heartfelt condolences to Sserunjogi’s family, the party, and the nation, acknowledging his death as a blow to the ongoing democratic struggle.

Beyond his parliamentary tenure, Sserunjogi held significant positions, including national vice-chairman of the DP in 2005, deputizing Prof. Mukiibi. He was also a key figure in local governance, serving as the vice-chairman of the Kampala City Council and deputy mayor between 1987 and 1989, alongside former Kampala mayor Dr. Joseph Wasswa Ziritwawula.

Dr. Ziritwawula fondly recalled Sserunjogi as a resourceful leader and dedicated colleague, highlighting their collaborative efforts to revive the DP in Kampala during the 1980s. Sserunjogi is to be laid to rest today at 4 PM in Nakwero, Gayaza Road, Wakiso District.

“He was very strong on party principles and despised unprincipled politicians who crossed from one party to another,” the DP stated in its condolence message, underscoring his integrity. His passing is deeply felt by those who knew him and worked alongside him for the advancement of democracy and the party.
