The Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), the youth arm of the Democratic Party (DP), have voiced serious accusations against the party’s top leadership, alleging the misappropriation of billions of shillings.

The youth specifically target the leadership under DP President General Norbert Mao, citing concerns over funds received through the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) and other party finances.

During a press conference in Mengo, UYD spokesperson Julius Dumba claimed that over Shs4 billion designated for the party’s media operations, as well as funds allegedly wasted or improperly spent during the Mbarara Delegates Conference, have been misused.

Dissatisfied with previous responses, the youth have reportedly approached the Inspectorate of Government (IG) to initiate an investigation. Their letter to the IG, dated July 9, 2026, outlines their concerns regarding the alleged misuse of party funds.

However, the Democratic Party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Kennedy Mutenyo, has urged the youth to utilize the party’s internal structures for addressing such grievances, asserting that the DP Constitution provides a framework for handling complaints.

Adding to the situation, the Inspectorate of Government has advised the youth to report their allegations to the police. According to IG spokesperson Munira Ali, the Deputy Inspector General of Government, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria, indicated that since the DP is not a government entity, the matter falls outside the IG’s direct jurisdiction and should be investigated by law enforcement.

The UYD has indicated they are prepared to pursue legal action if their demands for an investigation are not met, placing pressure on the DP leadership to account for the funds in question.
