Iran dismisses 'desperate' US sanctions threat, vows they will fail

Iran’s top diplomat has responded to threats of “the toughest sanctions in history” from the United States by labeling them as a sign of desperation. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated on Sunday that these anticipated measures would not succeed in overcoming Tehran.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce new sanctions, but Iran remains defiant despite its economy already grappling with significant international pressure. The country has endured repeated infrastructure damage and casualties following attacks by the US and Israel earlier this year.

Despite the severe economic impact, Iran has maintained its stance, even disrupting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil transport. This action has contributed to a rise in international oil prices.

Araqchi, in a video message, criticized the US approach, stating that shifting from military operations to “the same old plans” demonstrates desperation. He suggested that Washington should engage in respectful dialogue to find a solution based on “justice and honour.”

“We have never been afraid. All of their actions… have failed, and this new issue of theirs will fail as well,” Araqchi asserted. The US has warned countries against supporting Iran, urging cooperation from China, a major buyer of Iranian oil.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s army chief is scheduled to visit Tehran to discuss regional peace and security, with the US sanctions threat reportedly on the agenda. President Trump has indicated that Iran is not yet ready to make a “right deal.”

Despite significant damage to its economy and military capabilities, Iran retains missile and drone capacity to disrupt shipping and target regional adversaries. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has spoken of neighboring countries’ interest in new regional security and economic arrangements, accusing the US of endangering regional allies.

While Iran displays defiance, President Masoud Pezeshkian has also advocated for a diplomatic resolution, suggesting it’s better to end the conflict from a position of strength and international recognition of the US’s aggressive actions.
