Namutumba Health Centers Hampered by Lack of Dental Chairs, Stranding Patients

Students and rural residents in Namutumba District are experiencing significant hardship as local health centers lack essential dental chairs. A 19-year-old student, Titus Kabanda, has been suffering from a toothache for two months, unable to afford the transport to regional referral hospitals in Iganga or Bugiri.

Both Magada Health Centre III and Nsinze Health Centre IV, the district’s referral facility, are reported to be without dental chairs and other necessary equipment. This deficiency means that only the most basic tooth extractions can be attempted, and even these are made difficult and uncomfortable for both patient and practitioner.

Dr. Bright Isabirye, a dentist at Nsinze Health Centre IV, highlighted that the lack of a proper dental chair prevents crucial services like teeth cleaning, root canals, and surgical extractions. Furthermore, patients experiencing severe pain, especially at night, cannot receive adequate care as the chairs lack built-in lighting.

According to Dr. Allan Lubiite, the in-charge at Nsinze Health Centre IV, the shortage of dental chairs has been a persistent issue for decades, with the facility never having had one since its inception 90 years ago.

District officials acknowledge the problem but state they have no immediate solution, awaiting government provision of the equipment. In the meantime, the Iganga Rotary Club has pledged to support efforts to secure a dental chair, planning to lobby for resources and organize a fundraising event. Efforts are underway to address this long-standing gap in dental care.
