Parliament Recognizes Ghetto Kids for Global Achievements

The Parliament of Uganda recently honored the Ghetto Kids, a Kampala-based dance troupe, for their remarkable achievement in representing the nation on a global stage. The young performers captivated audiences worldwide with their appearance during the halftime show of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in the United States.

During a plenary session on Thursday, August 20, 2026, Speaker Jacob Markson Oboth lauded the Ghetto Kids for their performance alongside international stars like Shakira and Burna Boy. He emphasized that their success serves as a powerful testament to the fact that talent can blossom even in the most difficult environments.

The Speaker, introducing the group to the Members of Parliament, noted that their accomplishment transcends mere entertainment. He described it as a significant lesson for young Ugandans, illustrating the transformative power of opportunity. “At their age, these young stars… have stood on platforms that many can only dream of; carrying our Ugandan flag higher and making Uganda proud,” Oboth stated.

He further drew parallels with the group’s journey from adversity to international acclaim, underscoring that humble beginnings should not limit a young person’s aspirations. “They are a powerful reminder that talent can come from anywhere and that with opportunity and determination, our young people can rise to extraordinary heights,” he added.

Leaders from across the political spectrum echoed the Speaker’s sentiments. The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, and Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe, MP for Manjiya County, both congratulated the Ghetto Kids, framing their success as a victory of perseverance and a demonstration that destiny is not predetermined by one’s origins.

The Ghetto Kids, founded by Dauda Kavuma, have previously gained international recognition, including a Golden Buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent. Prior to the parliamentary session, the group met with the Speaker to discuss their vision for a Shs13 billion skills center aimed at empowering vulnerable youth across Uganda.

This recognition underscores the national pride generated by the Ghetto Kids’ international visibility.
