Police Officer Arrested in Lugazi for Alleged Defilement of Minor

Authorities in Lugazi Municipality, Buikwe District, have apprehended a police officer in connection with the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl. The incident is reported to have occurred on Thursday.

Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto confirmed the arrest, stating that the officer is under investigation for the alleged sexual abuse of a minor. “We have arrested our police officer on suspicion of defiling a minor, an act we condemn as police,” Butoto said.

She further noted that the officer, who was reportedly entrusted with protecting the girl, is accused of abusing his authority. The suspect is expected to be presented in court once the police investigation concludes. Evidence, including samples collected from the victim, has been sent to the Government Analytical Laboratory for examination to aid the inquiry.

The circumstances surrounding how the girl, whose parents are yet to be identified, came into contact with the officer are still being investigated. The victim has been placed under the care of the Child and Family Protection Unit at Lugazi Police Station.

Butoto urged parents to remain vigilant and engage in regular discussions with their children about personal safety, especially during school holidays. She cautioned that strangers might use gifts to lure children and stressed the importance of protecting all children, including boys, from sexual abuse.

According to police statistics, Uganda recorded 10,492 defilement cases in 2025, a decrease from the previous year. Of these, 7,019 were classified as simple defilement and 3,473 as aggravated defilement.
