Uganda Affirms Commitment to Somalia Peacekeeping Despite Western Aid Uncertainty

Uganda remains steadfast in its commitment to contributing to peace and stability in Somalia, with President Yoweri Museveni asserting that Ugandan forces will continue their presence in the nation. This commitment holds firm irrespective of the extent of financial or logistical backing from Western nations.

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which includes a significant Ugandan contingent, is in a critical phase, working towards the eventual handover of security responsibilities to Somali forces. The mission’s mandate and future are subject to ongoing discussions and evaluations by international stakeholders.

President Museveni’s declaration underscores Uganda’s long-standing dedication to regional security and its role in combating extremist elements in Somalia. The Ugandan People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has been a major contributor to ATMIS and its predecessor, AMISOM, for over a decade, playing a crucial part in degrading the capabilities of Al-Shabaab and creating a more secure environment for the Somali government.

While Western partners have historically provided substantial support to these peacekeeping efforts, the evolving geopolitical landscape and shifting priorities can influence the nature and scale of this assistance. However, Uganda’s position indicates a readiness to sustain its operational tempo, even if external aid fluctuates, prioritizing the stability of the Horn of Africa.

The future operational framework for ATMIS and its successors is a key point of discussion, with a focus on Somali-led security solutions. Uganda’s unwavering stance provides a measure of continuity as the mission navigates these complex transitions, aiming for a sustainable peace that can be maintained by Somalia itself.
