Wakiso Family Accuses Businessman Kalungi of Land Grabbing

Residents of Busukuma Division in Wakiso District have raised serious allegations against Kampala businessman Moses Kalungi, claiming he has unlawfully taken over a portion of their ancestral land.
The family of the late Kitamirike Sebinene asserts that Mr. Kalungi, who owns adjacent property, has extended his boundaries onto their 2.5-acre land without their consent or proper legal procedure.
Milly Namuswe, a daughter of the deceased, stated that the family has been in a protracted dispute with the businessman since the year 2000. She detailed how the family’s original 25 acres, inherited from their great-grandfather Yosan Mbaziira Kitamirike, was significantly reduced when a portion was sold off by their elder brother, leaving them with the 2.5 acres for which they possess a land title.
Namuswe expressed dismay that Mr. Kalungi is now laying claim to this remaining parcel, noting that he has employed graders to clear and level the disputed area. She further accused him of employing “goons” to harass her family and using violent tactics, even targeting a portion of the land that serves as their graveyard.
The contested land is situated at Kasambya Cell, Namulonge Parish, within Busukuma Division, identified as Block 185, Plot 158B. The recent confrontation involved the family, Mr. Kalungi, and his associates, which was eventually de-escalated by local village leaders.
In response to the accusations, Mr. Kalungi, a former Makindye Division Mayor, denied any wrongdoing. He claimed ownership of the entire land and stated he possesses a court order. He also mentioned that the recent boundary opening by the District Staff Surveyor was conducted without his consultation and that his own property was encroached upon, prompting him to fence it off. He indicated a willingness for a joint boundary opening to resolve the matter.
However, an intervention by John Kiwungulo, who is assisting the family, urged Mr. Kalungi to pursue legal channels rather than resorting to intimidation. The High Court’s Land Division has since issued a temporary order for the status quo to be maintained, preventing Mr. Kalungi and his employees from interfering with the property pending the case’s final resolution.
