178 Vehicles Impounded in First Day of Uganda's Road Safety Crackdown

The Uganda Police Force, through its Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, has commenced a significant operation targeting public service vehicles (PSVs) with Dangerous Mechanical Conditions (DMCs) within the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) area.
On the first day of the crackdown, Monday, August 24, 2026, a total of 178 vehicles were taken off the road. Superintendent of Police Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the directorate, confirmed the numbers, stating that the impounded vehicles were distributed across KMP East (53), KMP South (62), and KMP North (63).
This enforcement effort is part of a larger, 100-day initiative named “Operation Ganyegenya.” The operation specifically targets commuter taxis operating within Kampala and along major highways, focusing on ensuring that all PSVs are roadworthy and meet essential safety standards.
“The operation is aimed at ensuring that all Public Service Vehicles operating on our roads are roadworthy, properly maintained and compliant with the required safety standards,” SP Kananura explained.
The immediate impact of the operation was felt in the city’s central business district, where commuters faced a transport crisis. Several passengers were observed stranded at taxi parks, awaiting alternative transport as many vehicles were out of service.
This initiative was launched by the Ministry of Works and Transport in conjunction with the traffic police. The Minister of Works and Transport, Mr. Fred Byamukama, has emphasized that the operation is crucial for curbing road accidents and improving overall public safety.
