Busoga's Historic Schools Grapple with Declining Reputation

Busoga Sub-region, historically a beacon of educational excellence in Uganda, is facing a concerning decline in the performance and appeal of its once-renowned schools. Institutions like Busoga College Mwiri, Wanyange Girls Secondary School, and Namasagali College, which produced prominent leaders and professionals, are now seeing parents opt for newer, high-performing schools.

Education officials and stakeholders are calling for a concerted effort to revive these traditional institutions. They emphasize the need for rebuilding parental trust, improving school infrastructure, and fostering strong governance. Dison Bwire, Buyende District education officer, noted that parents’ confidence in school administrators is key, leading them to seek quality education elsewhere.

While some argue that these schools have not collapsed entirely, acknowledging their continued enrollment, others point to significant challenges. Eria Kisambira, Jinja District education officer, stressed the importance of committed boards of governors, financial accountability, and minimizing disruptions like strikes to improve academic outcomes.

Political will and resource allocation are also cited as critical factors. Paul Balinaine, Jinja City education officer, highlighted the need for increased funding for education in the region, which he believes is currently inadequate to foster effective competition.

Parents also bear responsibility, according to Baker Kasadhakawo, Iganga District education officer, who urged greater commitment to children’s education and ensuring they have necessary scholastic materials. Poor management and outdated facilities have also contributed to the decline, with some parents withdrawing their children in search of better-equipped institutions.

Despite the current struggles, the legacy of these schools, evidenced by their influential alumni, suggests a strong potential for recovery. The challenge lies in restoring the conducive environment that once enabled them to nurture talent and achieve national prominence. Foundation bodies and district education officials are urged to provide better oversight and support to ensure these historic institutions regain their lost glory.
