Elijah Luutu demonstrated remarkable composure to win the Johnnie Walker Uganda Seniors Golf Open at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante. The tournament, a 36-hole championship played over three days, saw Luutu emerge victorious despite a final round of 15-over 87, finishing with an aggregate score of 159 gross.
Luutu, who recently returned to Uganda from the United States, set a strong pace in the opening round with a level-par 72, establishing a five-shot lead. While the second round saw him struggle with bogeys and double-bogeys, his initial performance proved crucial.
Heavy rainfall on Saturday disrupted play, forcing the final groups to suspend their rounds and resume on Sunday. This delay extended the competition, but Luutu maintained his focus, closing out the championship with two pars to secure his advantage over Joseph Bagabo.
“I feel good. Any time you practice hard and win something, it’s a good feeling,” Luutu commented after his win against a field of 72 participants from three countries. He acknowledged the tournament’s challenging nature, particularly due to the weather interruptions.
In the ladies’ category, Jinja Club’s Catherine Pavie successfully defended her title, winning by two shots with a gross score of 177. She finished ahead of Rose Azuba and Jenina Nasimolo.
The event, which featured golfers aged 55 and above, concluded with Luutu’s hard-fought victory and Pavie’s successful title defense, highlighting the competitive spirit among the senior golfers.
