Guinea Landfill Collapse Claims 30 Lives

A devastating landslide at the PK-55 dump site in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, has claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals. The incident, which occurred on Monday, saw a massive pile of refuse collapse, burying several makeshift homes and their inhabitants.

Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene, braving dangerous conditions to search for survivors amidst the debris. However, the sheer volume of the landslide and the unstable nature of the dump site have made rescue efforts extremely challenging.

The disaster occurred less than a week after the Guinean government had announced plans to close the PK-55 landfill. The site, which has been a primary waste disposal area for the capital for decades, has long been criticized for its inadequate safety measures and environmental hazards.

Residents living near the landfill had previously raised concerns about the instability of the growing mounds of garbage, especially during the rainy season. Heavy rainfall in the preceding days is believed to have contributed to the catastrophic collapse.

This incident highlights the urgent need for improved waste management infrastructure and urban planning in Conakry, as well as addressing the precarious living conditions of those residing in close proximity to such hazardous sites. The government has promised a full investigation into the causes of the landslide and has pledged support for the affected families.
