Kampala Taxi Stages Fall Silent as ‘Ganyegenya’ Operation Intensifies

The streets of Kampala have seen an unusual quiet this week, with fewer taxis navigating major routes as traffic police aggressively implement the ‘Ganyegenya’ operation. This 100-day initiative focuses on inspecting public service vehicles for mechanical fitness, leading to a significantly reduced presence of taxis on roads typically choked with traffic.

Key routes like Sir Apollo Kaggwa Road and the Makerere-Wandegeya stretch, normally teeming with taxis, were remarkably sparse. Even the busy Kampala Road saw a considerable decrease in the number of public transport vehicles operating.

Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura stated that the operation is a crucial response to rising accident rates and aims to ensure all vehicles, especially those carrying passengers, are mechanically sound. Inspections are rigorously checking essential safety components, including vehicle bodies, tires, and seating.

Kananura revealed that a substantial number of public service vehicles, approximately 60%, have been found to be in poor mechanical condition during the ongoing checks. The operation is scheduled for 100 days but may be extended if necessary. Vehicles failing inspection risk being impounded and subjected to further scrutiny before any action is taken.

However, the crackdown has sparked concern among some taxi operators, particularly those within Kampala. Drivers like Yusuf Liwalo from Nakawa stage expressed that the sudden enforcement has created financial strain, with garages overwhelmed and daily incomes impacted. He highlighted the need for more preparation time for operators.

Despite the challenges for some, the reduced competition has created opportunities for operators whose vehicles meet the safety standards. While taxis on longer routes seem less affected, the ‘Ganyegenya’ operation is also extending to taxi parks to identify and remove unsafe vehicles from circulation.
