An ongoing, robust anti-corruption campaign in Uganda has led to the flight of some government officials from Kween District to Kenya, according to local authorities. Ms. Hope Atuhaire, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kween, stated that while many public servants accused of corruption are being brought to justice, a number in the Sebei sub-region have chosen to escape law enforcement by crossing the border.
Ms. Atuhaire emphasized that holding civil servants accountable is crucial for rebuilding public confidence, fostering transparency, and ensuring that development funds reach their intended recipients. She urged all public servants to maintain integrity and accountability, warning against the misuse of state resources and government programs. The RDC stressed the duty of public officials to safeguard taxpayer money for improved service delivery.
This crackdown aligns with increased monitoring by the Ministry of Local Government, which is conducting nationwide field inspections of major infrastructure projects. The ministry aims to verify project progress, ensure value for money, and confirm proper financial accountability for public funds.
Local leaders in Kween District have voiced their support for these intensified oversight measures. George Chemtai, an elder, commended the anti-graft drive, calling it essential for ensuring that public investments benefit the region and contribute to stability. He noted that improved security conditions in the area are also linked to enhanced police surveillance and community engagement.
These efforts build on a broader regional initiative launched in the Sebei region in 2023 to tackle public sector fraud and abuse of office, operating under the Directorate for Ethics and Integrity.
