Lwengo District Reels from Torrential Rain Damage

Torrential rains and storms lasting over two hours have caused significant destruction across three villages in Lwengo District. The deluge, which occurred Sunday night, left a trail of damage, including the demolition of numerous homes and the devastation of agricultural land.

Villages such as Kawule reported the destruction of 30 houses, while Lwenkoma saw 10 homes flattened. In Kyampalakata, over 10 agricultural plantations were decimated. Many residents, like Samuel Nsamba, have been left homeless.

Robert Ssekabira, the vice chairperson of Malongo Sub-County, highlighted the critical need for immediate food relief and building materials for the affected families. The destruction of food crops, many of which were nearing harvest, has raised serious concerns about impending hunger.

Local leaders, including Lwengo District chairperson Abas Kizito, are appealing to area Members of Parliament and the Office of the Prime Minister for swift humanitarian intervention. They are also working to secure aid for the displaced and those who have lost their livelihoods.

This severe weather event comes after a period of delayed rainfall in central Uganda, contrary to the usual patterns for this time of year. Weather experts had previously warned of potentially destructive rains, urging public alertness, particularly in mountainous regions.
