Police Issue Guidelines for National Cleaning Day Exemptions

The Uganda Police Force has announced new guidelines to clarify exemptions for the upcoming National Cleaning Day, scheduled for the last Saturday of every month. Following issues during the inaugural event where individuals with legitimate reasons to travel were sometimes prevented from doing so, authorities are establishing clearer rules.
Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke stated that specific categories of individuals and vehicles will be excused from participating in the cleaning activities, which run from 7 am to 10 am. These exemptions are crucial to ensure essential services continue and to avoid inconveniencing those with critical appointments.
Exempted individuals include patients, those heading to health facilities, and people with pre-scheduled medical appointments. However, proof of medical documentation will be required. Medical personnel, emergency services, and vehicles involved in cross-border transport, such as buses traveling to and from neighboring countries, are also exempt. Tourists and journalists undertaking their professional duties will also be allowed to move, provided cross-border vehicles remain on their designated routes.
Furthermore, individuals traveling to and from the airport will not be required to participate. ACP Rusoke stressed the importance of carrying valid identification and supporting documents for all exempted individuals to prevent any misunderstandings during the exercise.
The National Cleaning Day initiative, approved by the Cabinet, aims to combat diseases spread by poor sanitation and hygiene, which are reportedly responsible for a significant number of child deaths daily. The government seeks to foster a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility across the nation.
