Schools Urged to Own Transport to Enhance Student Safety

Schools are being encouraged to prioritize acquiring their own means of transport to ensure the safety of learners. This initiative aims to mitigate the dangers posed by road accidents, many of which are linked to the use of poorly maintained hired vehicles.
During a fundraising event for Gayaza Junior School’s new bus, retired Bishop Rt Rev James William Ssebaggala emphasized the critical need for schools to own buses. He highlighted concerns about the condition of some hired vehicles used for study tours and other excursions, stating that schools with their own fleets are more likely to adhere to regular maintenance schedules and employ qualified drivers.
This appeal follows a series of tragic incidents, including a recent accident involving pupils and staff of King David Junior School Ndejje. The Ministry of Education and Sports has since taken steps to review and reinforce road safety regulations for school transportation.
Parents and alumni echoed these sentiments, recalling a time when school-owned trucks were a safer mode of transport for students. The head teacher of Gayaza Junior School noted that relying on hired vehicles is not only inconvenient and costly but also presents logistical challenges.
The fundraising efforts for Gayaza Junior School’s bus are underway, with parents, the administration, and alumni collaborating. The school has already secured a significant portion of the funds needed for a new bus, which is anticipated to be unveiled later this year during the school’s anniversary celebrations.
