Canker sores, medically known as aphthous ulcers, are small, painful lesions that appear inside the mouth. While their exact cause remains elusive, several factors are believed to contribute to their development.
One significant factor is nutritional deficiency. Low levels of essential vitamins and minerals such as iron, vitamin B12, and folate have been linked to recurrent canker sores. Ensuring a balanced diet rich in these nutrients may help reduce their occurrence.
Beyond diet, stress and anxiety are frequently cited triggers. Emotional distress can weaken the immune system, potentially making individuals more susceptible to developing these mouth sores. Managing stress through relaxation techniques or lifestyle adjustments could be beneficial.
Minor injuries to the mouth’s lining can also pave the way for canker sores. This includes accidental bites to the cheek or tongue, or irritation from dental work, sharp foods, or even vigorous toothbrushing.
Certain foods can also act as irritants for some individuals. Acidic fruits and vegetables, spicy foods, and even chocolate or coffee have been identified as potential culprits that can trigger or exacerbate canker sores in susceptible people.
While typically resolving on their own within one to two weeks, canker sores can cause significant discomfort, affecting eating and speaking. Over-the-counter remedies like numbing gels or mouth rinses can offer temporary relief from pain. For persistent or unusually large sores, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable to rule out underlying conditions and discuss more targeted treatment options.
