Authorities in China have launched an investigation following reports and verified footage of individuals using formaldehyde to keep cabbages fresh for market. The chemical, commonly used for preserving biological specimens, is banned for use in food preservation in China due to its carcinogenic properties.
The footage, initially released by an environmental blogger, shows individuals dipping cabbages into a solution before loading them for transport. Officials in Hebei province confirmed the footage depicted real events.
Police have reportedly taken legal action against those involved. State media reports indicate that investigators are working to determine the extent of the practice and trace any affected vegetables. This effort aims to prevent public panic and restore confidence in the vegetable supply chain.
Local authorities in Kangbao county have stated that any illegal practices will be dealt with strictly. Meanwhile, Xinfadi market in Beijing, a major produce hub, has reported that none of the vegetables involved in the incident entered their market after an investigation into their supply sources.
The incident has drawn significant media attention, with editorials condemning the wholesalers’ disregard for consumer health in pursuit of profit. China is the world’s largest producer of cabbages, with a significant portion exported to neighboring Asian countries and Russia.
Exposure to high levels of formaldehyde is linked to cancer, although the effects of small amounts are less clear, according to the American Cancer Society.
