French Tourist Succumbs to Extreme Heat in Death Valley After Car Gets Stuck

A devastating incident unfolded in Death Valley, California, where a 68-year-old French tourist, Pierre Michel Formosa, lost his life due to extreme heat. Formosa and his travel companion were driving on West Side Road when their car became stuck in mud. The unforgiving temperatures, reaching 46.6C (116F), proved fatal as the pair attempted to walk across the salt flats to seek assistance.

Tragically, Formosa was unable to continue after approximately 1.3 miles due to the severe heat. While his companion managed to flag down a passing driver, rangers and police located Formosa later that afternoon, where he was pronounced deceased. The National Park Service confirmed the event, emphasizing the dangerous nature of Death Valley’s conditions.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous,” stated Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds. He added, “Death Valley is an extraordinary place, but its heat, distances, and remoteness can be dangerous, regardless of experience.” The park is currently under an extreme heat warning, with forecasts indicating the hottest week of the summer for Southern California.

This incident is part of a broader trend of heat-related dangers affecting tourists at US landmarks this summer, including multiple hiker deaths reported at the Grand Canyon in June. Coroners will officially determine the cause and manner of Formosa’s death.
