Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has stated that President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the immediate release of former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, from house arrest. Gen. Muhoozi also indicated that no prosecution will be brought against Ms. Among, despite acknowledged mistakes.

In a post on his X account, Gen. Muhoozi shared that the President personally instructed him to lift the restrictions imposed on Ms. Among at her residence. “Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Kainerugaba wrote, adding, “She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her.”

This announcement comes after months of intense investigations and security restrictions surrounding the former Speaker. Since May, security agencies have conducted searches at properties linked to Ms. Among as part of probes into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, and money laundering. Raids were carried out at her Nakasero residence in Kampala and extended to her home in Bukedea.

Gen. Muhoozi has previously referenced presidential authority in actions taken against Ms. Among during these investigations. The scrutiny intensified during the 2026 parliamentary leadership changes, leading Ms. Among to withdraw from the race for Speaker of the new Parliament. She has reportedly been under tight security restrictions at her home for several months.

As of publication, State House had not released any official statement confirming Gen. Muhoozi’s claims regarding Ms. Among’s release or the cessation of prosecution. It remains unclear if any seized assets will be returned or how other legal processes stemming from the investigation might be affected by this alleged directive.

Anita Among continues to serve as the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament. She previously held the position of Deputy Speaker before becoming Speaker of the 11th Parliament following the passing of Jacob Oulanyah. She has consistently denied the allegations of corruption and illicit wealth accumulation.
