Gomba Residents Urge Minister Balaam to Conduct Deep Probe into District Allegations

Residents and local leaders in Gomba and Mpigi districts have formally requested Minister of State for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, to dedicate significant time – at least two weeks per district – for thorough inspections. This plea comes in response to escalating concerns over alleged corruption, mismanagement, and a breakdown in government service delivery within these areas.

Minister Balaam has been on a nationwide tour, intensifying oversight activities with the stated aim of combating corruption and ensuring government programs reach their intended beneficiaries. His approach involves physical inspections to identify on-the-ground challenges. A recent video message from the minister warned of a more rigorous approach during his visit to Gomba, describing the district as “covered in rubbish” and threatening to “collect rubbish.”

These remarks have generated significant anticipation and debate among residents and local officials. Some in Gomba have expressed that the district’s problems are deeply entrenched, suggesting that the minister should bring along security forces, including the army and Special Forces, to address what they describe as systemic issues and “generals” causing problems.

Specific concerns have been raised regarding projects like the Kigezi Milk Collection Centre, reportedly established with substantial government funding but allegedly now in private hands. Residents also pointed to projects like the Rwakibira Dam, where billions of shillings are alleged to have been wasted. Similar calls for scrutiny have been echoed in Mpigi, where leaders are urging the minister to examine not only government buildings but also road infrastructure and the funds allocated for their maintenance.

Leaders in Mpigi’s Buwama Rural Sub-county and Buwama Town Council, while welcoming the minister’s attention, advised him to prepare for a complex investigation, suggesting that initial audits could uncover significant issues.

The residents and leaders of both districts have reportedly coined a slogan, “Mukutya Balaam, amagezi mwegasokera,” reflecting their mixed feelings of apprehension and expectation regarding the minister’s impending visit and investigations.
