High Court Relocates Besigye Trial Courtroom Amid Audio Issues

Proceedings in the treason trial of Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale were moved to Courtroom Three of the High Court in Kampala on Tuesday. This relocation was necessitated by significant technical difficulties experienced in the original courtroom, which severely hampered the clarity of audio evidence.

Court officials cited poor-quality equipment as the primary reason for the disruption, which had affected the previous day’s session. Prosecutors are currently presenting a lengthy audio recording, estimated to be two hours and twenty minutes long, as part of their case.

On Monday, the court also reviewed several video clips purportedly recorded in Geneva, Switzerland. During these recordings, a key prosecution witness, British national Andrew Wilson, identified himself on camera. However, for large portions of the footage, the back of his head was visible, obstructing the view.

Wilson testified that in brief, three-to-five-second segments of the videos, another individual, whom he identified as Dr. Besigye, briefly crossed the camera’s frame. The videos also reportedly show Joel Wakayima, described as an associate of Besigye, with his face clearly visible.

As the prosecution continues to build its case against Besigye and Lutale, Wilson is expected to present further audio and video evidence from other alleged meetings held in locations such as Athens, Greece, and Nairobi, Kenya. The presented evidence forms a crucial part of the treason-related charges.
