Kabale District Council Approves Four New Public Markets to Boost Trade

Kabale District Council has officially approved the creation of four new public markets, a decision aimed at stimulating commercial activity and increasing the district’s revenue. The council, during a session chaired by Speaker Flavia Nyinakiiza Kanagizi, recognized the need for organised trading spaces to support the growing economic landscape.

The approved markets will be situated in Maziba and Butanda sub-counties, focusing on produce, while Katuna and Ryakarimira town councils will host livestock markets. This strategic placement is expected to cater to the expanding populations and burgeoning commercial ventures in these areas, particularly noting the rise in cross-border trade and urbanisation in Katuna and Ryakarimira.

Councillors highlighted that the lack of formal markets has led to disorganized roadside vending, diminished revenue for the local government, and challenges in maintaining public health and trade standards. The new markets are anticipated to address these issues by providing regulated spaces for vendors and traders.

The motion, introduced by the Secretary for Finance, Administration, and Planning, Miria Akankwasa Tugume, aligns with the national Markets Act of 2023. Tugume emphasized that these markets will not only serve as vital infrastructure connecting producers, traders, and consumers but also contribute to the government’s broader goals of boosting employment and fostering local economic development.

The council further resolved that all market operations must strictly adhere to various laws, including the Markets Act, Local Governments Act, Physical Planning Act, public health regulations, environmental laws, and procurement guidelines. The implementation of these markets is expected to bring order, improve sanitation, and eliminate unregulated roadside trading.
