Kyaggwe supporters celebrated wildly on Sunday as their team secured a spot in the Airtel Masaza Cup quarter-finals with a 1-1 draw against Gomba. The result, achieved despite playing without supporters in a prior match, ensures Kyaggwe remains in contention for a title they feel was unjustly lost last season.
The draw, featuring goals from Gomba’s Meddie Kasule and Kyaggwe’s James Matege, maintained a remarkable pattern of identical results between the two sides this season. This stalemate propelled Kyaggwe to 20 points, four ahead of Gomba with one group game remaining.
While Kyaggwe has qualified, the Masengere Group remains highly competitive. Gomba holds 16 points, and Ssese’s recent victory has placed them firmly in contention, alongside Mawokota. The final group matches will be crucial for determining direct qualification and the best third-placed spots.
Elsewhere, Butambala strengthened their lead in the Muganzirwazza Group with a win, while Ssingo and Mawogola also secured victories. In the Bulange Group, Kyaddondo improved their chances with a win, though the race for qualification remains close, with several teams vying for the remaining quarter-final berths.
The upcoming final day of group fixtures promises intense competition across all three groups, with several matches holding significant implications for final standings and qualification scenarios. The Masaza Cup’s format allows for potential rematches in the knockout stages, adding another layer of intrigue.
