Land Disputes and Job Bribery Allegations Surface at Kyegegwa PLU Baraza

A recent public meeting in Kyegegwa District, organized by the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), became a platform for residents to air serious grievances. Among the most pressing issues were land disputes, with numerous individuals reporting fraudulent transactions, illegal trespass, and unauthorized alterations to land titles. A notable complaint involved an estimated 600 residents claiming unlawful eviction from their land by the National Forestry Authority (NFA).
Beyond land issues, allegations of corruption within district offices were rampant. Residents accused officials of demanding substantial sums of money for government employment. One woman recounted an incident where officials allegedly demanded Shs5 million for a midwife position, which her daughter ultimately did not secure, with the money also unreturned. Similar claims were made against the district service commission, suggesting public jobs are being exploited for personal financial gain.
Concerns were also raised about individuals being held in detention for extended periods without being brought before the courts. PLU coordinator Jovent Kyarimpa highlighted a specific case of a woman detained for 30 months without legal representation, criticizing the judicial system for perceived bias towards the wealthy and its apparent “commercialization.”
The baraza also featured a medical camp, providing free services such as cervical cancer screenings, HIV testing, dental and eye care, and antenatal services. Over 2,700 individuals received medical assistance, with common infections, diabetes, and chronic illnesses being the most frequent diagnoses. Expectant mothers also received maternity kits.
PLU officials stated that a report compiling these complaints would be submitted to PLU Chairperson Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for further action. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to combating corruption and improving service delivery across the country.
