Lockerbie Bombing Trial Delayed Again Due to New Evidence

The legal proceedings against Abu Agila Mohammad Kheir Al-Marimi, the Libyan man accused of constructing the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988, have been delayed once more. This marks the third postponement for the trial, which was slated to commence with jury selection in Washington D.C. this week.

Al-Marimi’s defense team revealed that “newly discovered evidence” emerged on August 21st, previously unknown to both the defense and the U.S. prosecution. This development has prompted the defense to request a delay to thoroughly investigate the new information, a request subsequently granted by the trial judge, Dabney Friedrich.

Al-Marimi, who has pleaded not guilty to building the device that killed 270 people, agreed with his lawyers that a postponement was necessary. The new start date has been set for January of next year, pushing the potential verdict into the spring.

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 remains the deadliest terrorist attack in British history. The aircraft exploded at 31,000 feet, killing all 259 passengers and crew, with 11 more people perishing on the ground in Lockerbie. Of the victims, 190 were American and 43 were from the United Kingdom.

Al-Marimi has been in U.S. custody since 2022. His trial was initially scheduled for May 2025 but was postponed due to the case’s complexity and Al-Marimi’s health. A subsequent April date was also called off. The postponement is a blow to victims’ families who have long sought justice for the tragedy.

This latest delay adds another twist to a case that has spanned nearly four decades. While the U.S. is leading the prosecution, Scottish authorities continue to support the pursuit of justice, acknowledging the disappointment this adjournment may cause for the families involved.
