Lutale's Daughter, Once Seen as Threat to Judge, Now to Defend Father

Hajj Obeid Lutale, an individual facing charges, has opted for new legal representation, appointing his daughter, Mariam Lutale, among his defense counsel. This development marks a significant turn, given Mariam’s previous public outburst in court.

Last year, Mariam gained notoriety when she became visibly distressed by court decisions related to her father’s trial. In a moment of high emotion, she grabbed media microphones and moved towards Justice Baguma, expressing her family’s exhaustion with the proceedings. The court’s security team intervened to prevent her from reaching the judge, whom she had threatened.

The incident caused a temporary halt to the trial, leaving onlookers in a state of shock. Justice Baguma had previously ruled that the constitutional questions raised by Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale did not warrant referral to the Constitutional Court.

Now, Mariam Lutale, who was previously forgiven and released without charges, is set to represent her father before the very judge she confronted. She will be working alongside her uncle, Farouk Kizito Kamulegeya, and other lawyers from Baraka Legal Associates Advocates.

This change in legal representation follows the rejection of state-appointed lawyers by both Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale. They had expressed a preference for Martha Karua and Erias Lukwago, who are currently unavailable. The departure of several law firms and the unavailability of their preferred counsel had left the accused in a position where they were considering representing themselves.
