Museveni bids farewell to outgoing Egyptian Ambassador, hails Uganda-Egypt ties

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni extended good wishes to H.E. Monzer Selim, the outgoing Egyptian Ambassador to Uganda, during a farewell meeting at State House, Entebbe. Ambassador Selim is concluding his four-year tour of duty on August 31, 2026.

During their discussions, Ambassador Selim expressed gratitude for the support he and the Egyptian Embassy received throughout his term. He revealed that his successor is expected to arrive in Uganda on September 4th. Selim also noted that his future responsibilities will keep him closely connected to Uganda, as he will be overseeing issues related to the Horn of Africa from his headquarters in Egypt.

The ambassador highlighted the substantial strengthening of economic and diplomatic ties between Egypt and Uganda. He pointed out that the number of major Egyptian companies operating in Uganda has increased from two to five during his tenure, a testament to growing investor confidence. Furthermore, the total value of operations by these companies has surged, with an anticipated rise to approximately $700 million next year from around $120 million at the start of his assignment.

Ambassador Selim commended President Museveni’s leadership, particularly his handling of sensitive regional matters such as developments in Somalia and Sudan, and his role in the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI). He praised Uganda’s efforts in fostering dialogue and cooperation within the NBI, stating, “Your wisdom and the wisdom of Uganda has guided the family of the NBI through troublesome times.” Both nations are exploring further cooperation, including the potential establishment of a joint business council and increased collaboration on infrastructure projects.
