President Yoweri Museveni has officially opened Phase IV Level 2 of the Ultra-Modern Rolling Mill Complex at Roofings Group in Namanve, Mukono District. The President praised the company for its substantial contributions to Uganda’s industrialization, local value addition, and the broader goal of developing a self-sustaining economy.
President Museveni contextualized Uganda’s industrialization within Africa’s historical challenges, noting how colonialism disrupted indigenous craftsmanship and fostered reliance on raw material exports. He recalled the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) commitment, since coming to power in 1986, to economic independence and integration, emphasizing the crucial role of regional markets for Ugandan producers.
He congratulated Roofings Group Chairman, Dr. Sikander Lalani, for his pivotal role in Uganda’s industrial transformation. The President pointed out that Roofings has progressed from importing intermediate products for local value addition to beginning local production of some of these materials. This strategic shift, he noted, is well-timed given Uganda’s abundant high-grade iron ore resources, presenting an opportunity for a competitive steel industry.
“This investment is not only expanding Uganda’s industrial capacity but is also creating employment opportunities for Ugandans and supporting the country’s transition towards a middle-income economy,” President Museveni stated. He also highlighted the project as an example of beneficial international cooperation, involving technology and expertise from Italy, Japan, and China.
Trade Minister Hon. Sanjay Tanna echoed the President’s sentiments, attributing the investment climate to the peace and stability fostered by the NRM government. He commended the government’s efforts, including reducing electricity costs for manufacturers, which has made Uganda’s industrial power tariffs competitive in the region.
Dr. Lalani expressed gratitude for the President’s presence and acknowledged that Roofings’ success is intrinsically linked to the nation’s peace and security. He pledged continued collaboration with the government to strengthen Uganda’s steel sector and provide quality iron sheets. Roofings Group Director, Mr. Oliver Lalani, affirmed the company’s commitment to the East African market and Uganda’s economic transformation, emphasizing the potential of regional integration.
The new rolling mill is part of a larger complex designed to increase local value addition and reduce reliance on imported steel products, reinforcing Uganda’s manufacturing capabilities.
