NZ religious leader jailed over death of Chinese follower

Kaixiao Liu, a musician known for appearing on a Chinese talent show, has been handed a prison sentence exceeding 10 years following his conviction for manslaughter and kidnapping. The case centers around the death of 70-year-old Shulai Wang, who had traveled from Hainan, China, to New Zealand in August 2023.

Wang moved into a property Liu called “the Ark” with Liu’s family and several other female followers. Prosecutors alleged that these women lived in “servitude,” with their lives tightly controlled by Liu, whom they referred to as “Lord” or “Master.” Wang’s daily activities included caring for Liu’s children, studying scripture, and gardening.

The court heard that Wang struggled to adhere to the sect’s strict rules, leading to frequent discipline. In March 2024, Wang attempted to escape but was apprehended and restrained. She died later that same day.

Liu, his family, and followers allegedly disposed of Wang’s body, wrapped in rice bags, near a marina. Evidence traced to Liu included unusually large purchases of a specific brand of rice used for the packaging. Liu’s wife, Lanyue Xiao, received a sentence of nearly eight years for related charges.

During the trial, Liu denied the charges and disputed claims of being a cult leader, stating he attracted followers solely through his music. His lawyer argued for leniency, claiming remorse, though Justice Mathew Downs noted Liu’s “callous indifference” and absence of remorse, stating Wang died a “lonely, frightening death.”
