Obeid Lutale Appoints New Legal Representatives in Treason Case

Hajj Obeid Lutale, facing treason charges, has significantly reshaped his legal defense by appointing a new team of advocates. The reconstituted team includes Lutale’s daughter, Mariam Lutale, alongside Farouk Kizito Kamulegeya, Wilson Kato, and Sylas Ogul from Baraka Legal Associates Advocates.

This change comes in the wake of the withdrawal of Lutale’s previous legal representatives. The development is further complicated by the ongoing absence of his co-accused, Dr. Kizza Besigye. Besigye’s absence, due to health complications following a collapse in court, has reportedly left Lutale to navigate the proceedings with less support.

During a recent court session, lawyer Bayern Turinawe also appeared, clarifying that he was specifically representing Lutale, not Dr. Besigye’s defense team as initially assumed by the judge. The prosecution, meanwhile, continues to present evidence related to alleged meetings in Athens and Geneva. While Lutale has not been a prominent figure in the evidence from these locations, a prosecution witness has previously mentioned alleged events in Nairobi, Kenya, where Lutale is reportedly implicated.

Further complicating matters, some video evidence from Nairobi is said to have been lost, potentially making any remaining Nairobi-related material crucial for the prosecution’s case against Lutale. The prosecution is expected to continue presenting audio and video evidence as the trial progresses. In contrast, Lutale’s other co-accused, Captain Denis Oola, has accepted state-appointed lawyers for his defense.
