Taxi Operators Voice Concerns Over Road Safety Crackdown

A recent crackdown on taxis operating with dangerous mechanical defects (DMC) has stirred concerns among operators in Kampala and surrounding areas. The Ministry of Works and Transport, in conjunction with the Uganda Police Force, has launched a 100-day operation aimed at removing unsafe vehicles from the roads.

Taxi drivers acknowledge the importance of roadworthy vehicles but argue that many rely on their taxis for daily income and cannot afford prolonged periods off the road for repairs. Factors such as damaged roads and frequent mechanical issues, exacerbated by economic hardship since the COVID-19 pandemic, make maintenance a significant financial burden. Drivers report that even minor repairs can cost upwards of Shs500,000, a sum difficult to recoup given low daily earnings and high fuel prices.

The operation has also led to considerable disruption for commuters, with many experiencing significant delays in reaching their destinations. Operators are requesting more time to address vehicle issues, as the short notice of the enforcement has made immediate repairs impossible for many.

Many taxis have been parked due to fear of impoundment, while operational taxis have reportedly increased fares substantially. The situation highlights the complex interplay between road safety regulations, the economic realities faced by transport workers, and the need for reliable public transport. Some operators point out that many of these vehicles are second-hand with pre-existing issues, and for some, they are the sole source of income, supporting multiple families.

This initiative underscores the challenges in balancing public safety with the livelihoods of those in the transport sector. The operators are calling for a more phased approach to vehicle upgrades and greater consideration for their financial circumstances.
