20 Arrested in Kamuli for Shs100 Million Fake Dollar Scam

Authorities in Kamuli District have taken 20 suspects into custody in connection with a sophisticated scam involving counterfeit US dollars, which allegedly cost a victim Shs100 million. The arrests were confirmed by Busoga North Police spokesperson Samson Lubega, who identified the suspects as residents of Buwagi Village in Nawanyago Sub-county.

According to police, the group operated by promising to sell US dollars at significantly reduced exchange rates, enticing individuals looking to acquire foreign currency. A common tactic involved offering dollars worth Shs50 million for a mere Shs20 million in Ugandan shillings.

To gain the trust of potential victims, the scammers would present genuine US dollars for verification at local banks. This initial step aimed to convince targets of the legitimacy of their operation. However, once victims returned with substantial amounts of cash, the suspects are accused of either swapping the real dollars for fake ones or resorting to violence, assaulting the victims, and fleeing with their money.

Investigators revealed that the perpetrators employed various deceptive narratives to lure their targets. One common ploy involved claiming the dollars belonged to an elderly individual unaware of legitimate exchange options. These fabricated stories were designed to create a sense of urgency and opportunity for the victims.

The operation leading to these arrests was prompted by multiple complaints from individuals who had fallen prey to the syndicate.
