A suspect detained for burglary and theft, identified as 30-year-old Derrick Kasumba, also known as Kalevu, met a tragic end in Kassanda district. Kasumba managed to escape from the Manyogaseka sub-county police station around 9 am on Wednesday while being escorted to the restroom.
According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, the suspect’s escape was not prevented by the officer guarding him, Constable Aaron Nalyanya. About an hour later, police received information that Kasumba had been apprehended by a mob in Lwenyange village.
The officer in charge of the station, Emmanuel Ogwang, dispatched Constable Nalyanya to the scene. Upon arrival, Nalyanya found the mob still assaulting Kasumba. The group dispersed upon seeing the police officer.
Nalyanya managed to retrieve the severely injured Kasumba and transported him back to the police station. Kasumba’s condition worsened rapidly, and he was taken to Kyansaswa Health Centre III, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities have initiated investigations into both Kasumba’s escape and the subsequent mob attack. The body has been sent for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death, and police are actively seeking to identify and arrest those involved in the assault.
