French Court Recognizes Cosmic Radiation as Factor in Flight Attendant's Breast Cancer

In a significant legal precedent, a French court has recognized cosmic radiation as a cause of breast cancer in a long-serving flight attendant. Sophie Lainault, a 59-year-old former Air France stewardess, successfully argued that her illness was an occupational disease linked to her profession.

The ruling in Bayonne identified cosmic radiation as one of three carcinogenic hazards Lainault faced, alongside passive smoking (prevalent on flights until 2000) and prolonged night work. Lainault, who accumulated over 12,600 flight hours between 1989 and 2019, often flew at high altitudes, including near the North Pole where cosmic radiation exposure is more intense.

This decision allows Lainault, who is now in remission, to retire early with full reimbursement for any future treatment. Legal experts suggest this ruling could pave the way for numerous other claims from flight crews who have experienced similar health issues.

Lainault expressed her hope that the decision would empower other women in similar situations to come forward. Recent research from Harvard Medical School indicated that flight attendants and pilots experience the highest rates of radiation-related cancer deaths among various professions.

While the health risks of cosmic radiation at high altitudes have been known, this is the first time a French court has officially linked it to breast cancer in an air hostess, establishing a new precedent for occupational disease recognition in the aviation industry.
