German Airport Worker Succumbs to Malaria After Suspected Mosquito Incursion

A devastating loss has occurred at Germany’s busiest airport, Frankfurt, where a worker has died from malaria. The infection is part of a cluster that has affected six airport employees.

Authorities suspect the mosquitoes responsible for spreading the disease arrived at the airport via a plane. This is considered a rare occurrence in Germany, where malaria is typically contracted by long-haul travelers returning from endemic regions.

The remaining five infected individuals are currently undergoing medical treatment. An airport spokesperson confirmed the fatality, stating, “Sadly, we must confirm that one employee has died as a result of the infection.”

To identify the source, traps have been set up throughout the airport, and any captured mosquitoes will be analyzed to determine their species and origin. Airport operator Fraport has informed all employees and advised them to seek medical attention if they develop any symptoms.

The Robert Koch Institute, a German public health agency, noted that malaria transmitted within a German airport environment is uncommon. They also highlighted that a delayed diagnosis, which can occur when there’s no recent travel history, increases the risk of severe illness.

The last recorded case of airport-related malaria in Germany was also at Frankfurt Airport in 2023. Malaria is a parasite-borne disease transmitted by certain mosquitoes, primarily found in tropical areas. While preventable and curable, it can range from mild to life-threatening.
