Government Condemns Deadly Riots at Terego Refugee Settlement

The Ugandan government has strongly condemned the violent clashes that erupted at the Terego refugee settlement in Arua District, leading to fatalities and significant destruction.

During the chaos, two individuals lost their lives, and 35 others were apprehended by security forces. Government offices within the settlement were reportedly set ablaze and vandalized.

According to Lilian Aber, the State Minister for Disaster Preparedness, the violence originated from disagreements during the preparation for electing a Refugee Welfare Council, a body meant to represent the refugees’ interests.

Tensions flared when Charles Loora, a candidate for the council, was allegedly not nominated. This dispute quickly escalated into a violent confrontation, with reports suggesting some protesters attempted to seize weapons from security personnel.

Minister Aber stated that the fatalities occurred when protesters tried to disarm the security detail. She emphasized that resorting to violence to resolve grievances is unacceptable and that peaceful, lawful avenues exist for addressing disputes.

The 35 arrested individuals are expected to face charges in court for their involvement in the unrest. The minister cautioned refugees against using violence, warning that those found responsible could face severe consequences, including potential repatriation.

This incident at Terego follows similar concerns over tensions related to refugee leadership structures, with a comparable event recently occurring at the Kiryandongo refugee settlement.

The government is reportedly implementing measures to prevent future violence in refugee settlements and encourages refugees to utilize existing leadership and dispute-resolution channels for their concerns.
