Kabale Division Imposes Shs10,000 Fine for Skipping National Cleaning Day

Authorities in Kabale Municipality’s Northern Division are cracking down on non-participation in the National Cleaning Day, a government initiative aimed at improving sanitation and environmental health.

Residents who fail to engage in the monthly cleaning exercise will face a Shs10,000 fine. The Division LC3 Chairperson, Patrick Tushabomwe, announced this penalty, emphasizing the importance of collective participation.

The National Cleaning Day, launched in July, occurs on the last Saturday of each month. Its objectives include enhancing public health, conserving the environment, and reducing disease transmission linked to poor sanitation.

To ensure compliance, LC1 chairpersons have been tasked with monitoring household participation. “We have instructed LC1 chairpersons to ensure that at least each household is represented. Failing to do so will result in a fine of Shs10,000,” Tushabomwe stated.

Beyond general cleanliness, Tushabomwe urged residents to use the cleaning day to clear drainage systems and reinforce their homes in preparation for anticipated heavy rains. He specifically highlighted areas like Ruhita Village and Ihimbi Village for their poor drainage, which could increase flood risks.

The National Cleaning Day guidelines restrict movement and business operations from 7 am to 10 am on the specified Saturday. During this period, residents are expected to clean their immediate surroundings, including drainage channels. Enforcement includes restrictions on various forms of transport and the closure of businesses until 10 am, with specific exemptions for essential personnel and services.
