Masaka Oil Palm Project Set to Launch Early Next Year After NEMA Approval

The long-awaited oil palm project in Masaka District is slated to begin early next year, with actual planting scheduled for the first rainy season in March 2027. This comes after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) gave the green light to the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment report for land designated for oil palm cultivation in the Kyannamukaaka, Kyesiiga, and Buwunga sub-counties.

According to Anthony Wanyoto, communications and knowledge management officer at NOPP, technical teams are prepared to commence land clearing and preparation for farmers. Seedlings will be sourced from the Oil Palm Uganda Limited nursery in Kalangala, given its proximity. The project aims to start with a minimum of 500 hectares, and farmer mobilization is underway to encourage participation through cooperatives.

Currently, 117 hectares have been secured, with an additional 100 acres approved. Wanyoto noted that initial plans for over 2,000 hectares were reduced significantly after land in Bukakkata Sub-county was excluded due to ecological and cultural sensitivities, including a Ramsar site.

Farmers are being advised to utilize bare land parcels, as the project discourages the removal of existing cash or food crops. For those without suitable land, alternative livelihood opportunities like poultry and beekeeping are being explored. The project is expected to boost service delivery in the district, with plans for road improvements to facilitate the transport of inputs and harvested produce, alongside a skilling program to address unemployment.

While the government will supply seedlings, fertilizers and labor costs will be provided as loans to be repaid upon harvest. Masaka District has also identified a site at Nkuke for a coordination office and storage facilities, pending ministerial approval for construction.
