President Yoweri Museveni has publicly endorsed the anti-corruption initiatives spearheaded by ministers Balaam Barugahara and Justine Nameere. These tours, which involve direct engagement with communities, have been instrumental in uncovering widespread corruption that was previously concealed by officials and elites.
Museveni stated that the frequency and scale of corruption complaints reported during these tours validate their necessity, countering claims that the ministers were acting without sufficient grounds. He revealed that during his own election campaigns, he frequently encountered public anger over corruption, including issues related to the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Concerns raised by elders in Bunyoro about the alleged sale of local government jobs, as well as reports of ‘ghost’ participants in educational programs and irregularities in public health facilities, further underscore the pervasiveness of the problem. The President emphasized that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) must now assign a dedicated officer to expedite the assessment of evidence gathered during these tours.
“The challenge now is for the DPP to have a dedicated officer that can quickly assess the abundant evidence against these criminals so that they are prosecuted,” Museveni urged. He highlighted that the tours bypass the ‘blockade of thieves’ manned by responsible elements within the elite, allowing direct communication with citizens.
The President noted that corruption is stoppable and called upon government officials not to protect corrupt colleagues. He also implored citizens with information to come forward and report wrongdoing, drawing parallels to the early days of the NRM when public participation was high.
Museveni specifically commended Works and Transport minister Fred Byamukama for exposing an extortion racket within State House, which led to arrests. He stressed that the government must ensure credible evidence leads to criminal proceedings, transforming public exposure into tangible accountability.
