Prince Nakibinge Urges Muslims to Preserve Land for Economic Prosperity

Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, a prominent figure in Uganda’s Muslim community, has issued a strong appeal to believers to reconsider the practice of selling ancestral land. He urged them instead to focus on utilizing their land for agriculture and other income-generating activities as a sustainable pathway out of poverty.

Speaking at the national Mawlid celebrations in Masaka City, Prince Nakibinge noted with concern that some individuals sell land for immediate financial gain, often to purchase assets like vehicles that do not generate further wealth. “It’s unfortunate that some people end up selling their land to buy cars, motorcycles, among other things. This can’t make you more money than what you can get from your land if you utilize it well,” he stated.

He further cautioned that undeveloped land is particularly vulnerable to land grabbers. For those unable to engage in immediate farming, he suggested planting trees as a protective measure. Prince Nakibinge also advised against land fragmentation, explaining that subdividing property diminishes its overall economic value compared to maintaining it as a cohesive unit.

The Mawlid, an annual Islamic observance commemorating the birth of Prophet Muhammad, featured prayers and community gatherings. Prince Nakibinge commended Masaka residents for their support of Buganda Kingdom initiatives and praised the event organizers for fostering an inclusive atmosphere that welcomed individuals from diverse religious backgrounds.

The event also marked the official appointment of Sheikh Badru Wasajja Kiruuta as the new Masaka District Khadi, succeeding Sheikh Sulait Hamis Ssentongo. Sheikh Kiruuta pledged to focus on the social and economic advancement of the Muslim community in Masaka. The gathering saw attendance from various dignitaries, including Bishop Severus Jjumba of the Masaka Diocese, local politicians, and Members of Parliament.
