Prince Nakibinge Urges Muslims to Preserve Land for Sustainable Development

Prince Kassim Nakibinge Kakungulu, a prominent leader within Uganda’s Muslim community, has issued a stern warning to Muslims against the practice of selling off their land for short-term financial gains. He highlighted that land is a valuable resource that, when strategically utilized, can yield significantly greater wealth than any immediate sale.
During the recent National Mawlid celebrations in Masaka City, Prince Nakibinge implored community members to prioritize using their land for productive purposes such as agriculture and livestock farming. He cautioned that leaving land idle not only represents a missed economic opportunity but also makes it vulnerable to land grabbers.
“It is regrettable that some individuals sell their land to acquire immediate possessions like cars and motorcycles,” Prince Nakibinge stated. “These purchases cannot generate the sustained income that well-managed land can provide.” He further advised that even planting trees can be a viable method to maintain land’s productivity and deter encroachment, particularly for those unable to engage in large-scale farming.
The Prince also touched upon the issue of land fragmentation, cautioning that excessively subdividing plots can diminish their overall economic value. He encouraged consolidating landholdings for greater efficiency and profitability.
Nakibinge took the opportunity to commend the residents of Masaka for their steadfast support of the Buganda Kingdom and its initiatives. He also expressed gratitude for their role in hosting the national Mawlid, an event that successfully brought together individuals from various religious backgrounds.
The celebrations also saw the official consecration of Sheikh Badru Wasajja Kiruuta as the new Masaka District Khadi, succeeding Sheikh Sulait Hamis Ssentongo. Sheikh Kiruuta pledged his commitment to strengthening the Muslim community within the district and acknowledged his predecessor’s contributions.
Attendees at the event included a diverse group of religious leaders, such as Masaka Diocese Bishop Serverus Jjumba, alongside several political figures and local legislators.
