Tragedy struck on Tuesday as an elderly Rwandan woman was pronounced dead aboard a bus en route from Kampala to Kisoro. The deceased, whose identity has not yet been released, was traveling with her son.
According to fellow passengers, the woman had boarded the bus in Masaka while in a poor state of health. The bus crew was reportedly unaware of her deteriorating condition throughout the journey, as her son did not alert them to her worsening health or her passing.
The somber discovery was made when the bus stopped at the Kanaba checkpoint in Kisoro District for a routine inspection. Passengers were asked to disembark, and it was at this point that the woman’s death became apparent.
The bus was subsequently escorted to Kisoro Central Police Station. The woman’s body was removed and transported to the Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
The incident caused significant disruption for the other passengers, who were required to remain at the police station while authorities managed the situation and arranged for the postmortem.
Sebizuru Emmanuel, the Chairperson of Kisoro Bus Operators, confirmed the incident and issued a strong caution to the public. He advised against transporting critically ill individuals on public buses, emphasizing the need for proper medical transport to prevent such unfortunate events and distress to fellow travelers.
Authorities are awaiting the results of the postmortem to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The bus involved has since been released by the police.
