Security Presence Reduced at Ex-Speaker Anita Among's Residence

Security deployments at the Nakasero residence of former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, have seen a notable reduction. Previously, the residence was under significant security presence, including personnel from the Special Forces Command (SFC). However, recent observations indicate a shift, with SFC soldiers no longer visible at the main gate.

This change in security posture comes shortly after the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced that President Yoweri Museveni had pardoned Among. Gen. Kainerugaba stated that the President had directed that Among be released and would not face prosecution over allegations that were under investigation by security agencies.

Among’s recent troubles reportedly stemmed from a political fallout earlier this year concerning the speakership of Parliament. Following this, security agencies raided several of her properties across the country as part of investigations into alleged corruption, abuse of office, money laundering, and illicit wealth accumulation. She was subsequently placed under house arrest at her Nakasero home, with her bank accounts reportedly frozen.

While Among remained largely inaccessible following the announcement of her release, visitors to her residence were informed she would not be receiving guests during the day. The security presence at the gate now consists of Counter Terrorism Police officers, with some individuals in civilian attire observed nearby.

Amidst these developments, Among has publicly expressed her gratitude to President Museveni for his “parental grace” and decision to show mercy, and thanked Gen. Muhoozi for his professionalism. She affirmed her commitment to continuing her duties as the Woman MP for Bukedea and supporting the government.

The decision to spare Among prosecution contrasts with the ongoing legal proceedings against several senior parliamentary officials, some perceived as her close associates, who face charges related to the alleged mismanagement of approximately Shs 37 billion. Among herself had not been formally charged prior to Gen. Muhoozi’s announcement.
