Uganda's Courts Witness High-Stakes Drama: Besigye Trial, Murder Sentences, and Legal Battles

Uganda’s courts were the stage for a dramatic week, marked by weighty decisions across multiple high-profile cases. At the forefront was the treason trial of opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, where a state witness presented explosive testimony alleging a plot to acquire weapons and destabilize the government.

Andrew Wilson, a private security investigator, testified that he covertly recorded clandestine meetings in Switzerland involving Besigye and Joel Wakayima. Wilson detailed discussions about obtaining grenades, drones, and surface-to-air missiles, with initial plans focusing on Kisumu, Kenya, before shifting to an airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo due to surveillance concerns. The witness further alleged that the discussions escalated to plans for an attack on Kampala, including an assassination attempt on President Yoweri Museveni using drones, and the fomenting of civil unrest.

In a separate case in Soroti, the High Court delivered life imprisonment to Susan Vivian Ariokot Okedi and 45-year and 35-year sentences to Detective Corporal John Bosco Obotol and school director Joseph Okedi, respectively, for the murder of a five-year-old school pupil. The convictions were based on key evidence from former pupils, DNA findings, and forensic reports.

Meanwhile, lawyer Male Mabirizi was granted mandatory bail after exceeding the constitutional remand period without trial. He faces charges related to alleged defamatory TikTok publications targeting high-ranking judicial officials.

Further legal pronouncements included the sentencing of two members of the Kabadia criminal gang to an additional 80 years for murder, bringing their total nominal sentences to 150 years. In commercial litigation, businessman Patrick Bitature was ordered to pay $256,136.17 in outstanding architectural consultancy fees.

Finally, advocate Carlton Douglas Kasirye was awarded Shs 60 million in damages after successfully suing Sheena Ahumuza Bageine for defamatory social media posts that falsely portrayed him as a rapist. Bageine was also ordered to issue a retraction and apology.
